Yes, generally I recommend going with stock. New firmware doesn't necessarily mean custom firmware. Possibly there's an update to the stock firmware, but Umi Cross MT6589 is a relatively new phone though, you may have to try some custom firmware.
If your phone is already rooted, then you can put the CWM on your phone through Mobile Uncle. Copy it to SD and then use Mobile Uncle to install it. Then install the new firmware through SD.
