For rooting, follow the Gizbeat 101 tutorial in the Root forum.
I don't recommend changing firmware. The MSM8974 is Snapdragon 800. It's very unlikely a clone is using this CPU. It's faked information. You probably actually do have MTK. Regardless, unless you're having some serious issues with your firmware, just leave it alone. Well made custom ROMs for clones aren't very common.
I actually think you have Star U9000. It shows MSM8974 which is faked. You can test this by installing ADB drivers and MTK Droid Tools. All of the tools are in the Root, Develop sub-forums.

Also, assuming it's the same phone I think it is, it's also known as Ulefone u9000. They're not bad phones. You could have gotten much worse. Star / Ulefone generally put out decent phones.

I have got this same phone about a month ago. although specs show 2gb Ram, Antutu test only show 1gb also the CPU shows as Qualcomm Snapdragon but like Gizbeat says, it appears to be faked. There appears to be only 4GB Internal Ram although system says 12gb most of it cannot be accessed.
It started to flicker with charging problems and could not restart after less than a month.
Took it back to Seller and they did a 1-1 replacement. new one seems to have an upgraded firmware which is better than the first one. Overall look is nice, Antutu ranking is somewhere about 13550 to 13750.
Screen is decent and good enough for watching vids, surfing and playing games however I find the input a bit over sensitive. When typing I have to be slow otherwise I get double alphabets. it also does not work well when plugged in to power, keyboard becomes very jumpy.
the smart cover is ok but you can only change the screen background when the cover is closed. don't understand the logic of that.
I tried one click root but it failed, No issues with failed root, just rebooted.
I also saw that SRSroot lists it as compatible, but I'm a bit afraid to try as SRS does not seem to have been updated since around Feb or March 2013.
Not as good as my cheaper Onda V819 Mini which I must say is of excellent build quality.
Btw, It is not 100% like the Star U9000. In system specs the GPU shows as Adreno330 instead of Power VR544.
Don't worry if it hasn't been updated. It will either work, or it won't. It won't do any damage to the phone. Try framaroot first.

Any news on your phone yet? Interested to know if you managed to root it successfully with no other problems.
There is discussion on this phone in another forum : another forum. html , but it is in Italian and it seems rooting causes loss of GPS function.
The first ROM I had was version : JDQ39.N9006ZCUBMHJ_20131111_GQ3013_V5
This had some issue of not keeping time when I remove battery and game apps shortcuts disappearing.
The replacement I was given had a updated ROM: version : JDQ39.N9006ZCUBMHJ_20131204_GQ3013_V9 which is much better.
