I tried reading about Yulypis CWM recovery, but I don't understand fully how and why to use it. Is it a tool, or a custom backup of S5 software - what is it?

CWM (ClockWordMod) a custom recovery utility for Android that replaces the built in stock Android recovery console and provides many more features. Either custom or standard recovery utilities reside on a separate partition from the system or user data, therefore they can be used to restore your Android OS from a stock ROM ZIP file stored on your SD card... that's one example.
