[Top 3] Books!
#1
List top 3 books. First 3 books that come to mind, or top 3 that have changed your life or stuck with you in some way.

Mine:

  • Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follett
  • Crime and Punishment - Dostoevsky
  • Old Man and the Sea - Steinbeck
  • Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan
  • The Dragonbone Chair - Tad Williams
  • The Eyes of the Dragon - Steven King
  • Of Mice and Men - Steinbeck
  • Many books by Elmore Leonard
  • The Grapes of Wraith - Steinbeck
  • Magician's Apprentice - Raymond E. Feist

Okay. That's more than 3, but figured I'd make it easy on some of you who may not read too much Big Grin. I can't really remember most of them, other than some bits and pieces and basic premise, but I do remember they affected me at the time and are the first ones that come to mind.

If you can't come up with 3, post 1 or 2! Vampire

fun idea, here's mine of the top of my head and not sorted in any particular way:

Lord of the Rings (has to be on any list)
Elric of Melnibone & Corum (or any other book from the eternal champion series of M. Moorcock)
Frank Herberts' Dune (fantastic book series)
Do Androids dream of electic sheep (yes, the Blade Runner book)
John Carter of Mars (the whole series)
The Sunset Warrior Cycle (E. v. Lustbader)
World War Z
Lights Out (David Crawford)
Voyage (C.P. Lockman - beware very adult material)
A brief history of time (Steven Hawking)
Flood & Ark (Stephen Baxter)

by no means complete.....
my phones current and past:
Brand phones:
  • Samsung Galaxy Apollo/Leo/3 - retired, 2x Samsung Galaxy S - gone, Samsung Galaxy Note - stolen Sad , Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos - retired
  • Samsung Galaxy S3

  • Samsung Galaxy S4 black edition (work issue)
China phones:
  • Pinphone 3 (never received), Smarty A8 (MTK6515 HTC Chacha clone), iNew V3 - sold
  • Xiaomi Redmi 1s - Wife's daily driver
  • Xiaomi MI3 64GB with MagicSim on dual bootMIUI v5 (4.8.22) /CM11
Others:
  • ZTE Open (FirefoxOS) - now running ICS! -retired from duty.

Looks like we have very similar tastes. Dune sticks in my head just as much as previously listed books.

Bladerunner is probably my favorite movie of all time.

Somewhat ashamed to say, being the huge lover of fantasy that I am, that I've never been able to get through the Lord of The Rings books or the Hobbit. Which is strange given that I made it through Crime and Punishment Big Grin

Lately have been reading the phenomenal series - The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell. [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register] Some of the greatest battle scenes ever written and Cornwell puts his words together phenomenally. Main character reminds me of Conan a bit, but he fights in wars and it takes place in 9th century Britain.

Picking the top 3 books is impossible for me.
Authors is still nearly impossible.
but I have to go for
Edgar Rice Burroughs as his books got me to start to read books for enjoyment.

Wilbur Smith
Catherine Coulter
The more I think the more books pop in to my mind.
Clive Cussler
David Eddings
Raymond E Feist
This is hopeless as there are so many.

I do agree with linr76 that John Carter of Mars was fantastic series.

I had always hated reading at school and for the next ten years after leaving school
i had never read a book for fun.
Then one day when I was going on holidays and a mate had given me the first few books in the John Carter of Mars series to take with me. I do not know what made me start a book apart from his recommendation but that changed my opinion on books and reading and I was hooked. It still must be a good book but there are so many to try it is hard to know which ones.
This will give me a heap of new ones to try.

Sniper47 also listed Ken Follett, Steven King, Raymond E. Feist which I very much enjoyed.
I have 23 books by Elmore Leonard which I will try after Sniper47 recommendation
Also 20 Ken Follett books I will try.
Actually I will check out all the mentioned Authors.
I have trouble remembering if I have listened to a book. I may get one hour into it before I remember I have heard or read it. I now keep a record of books I have heard so I do not listen to them again.

Well, like what's the first 3 books that come to mind. Don't think too hard. Just type the very first 3 or 4 or 10.

That is amazing regarding the story of how you started reading... I read quite a bit as a teenager.

I hated school, and English & reading was the worst part of school.
I was amazed what difference a good book and not being forced to read did.
I have spent 30 years enjoying books after that first good book.
The first 20 plus years reading and the last 8 or so listening to Audio books.

i do have to say that my mother is a real bookworm and i started reading very early also.
i have always enjoyed reading.
at age 16 i changed from german books to english only, since i think there is too much lost in translation ( i do the same with movies)
most books i own in traditional paper format, but a few years ago i bought a chinese ereader (a nfff 4something with SiPix e-ink - its the same as eg a BQ Avant) but since 2 years i have a Nook Simple Touch (Pearl e-ink) imported from UK.
i never touch a book anymore, i read everything on the Nook. even my mother, who is now using my nfff reader doesnt like books anymore now, she really enjoys the ereader.
i've tried audiobooks but i can't say i enjoy them much, i rather read the book myself.

interesting stories so far, keep 'em coming!

For some reason I prefer it to having an actual person read to me. But that could just be the 'idea' of someone reading to me. It's rather intimate... Having someone read to you... And the idea of a stranger doing it seems odd. But maybe It's something I haven't tried enough of.

I think that I have over 1000 paper books at home but I read exclusively from my Chinese tablet lately. I commute to and from work on a train so I have almost two hours to read every weekday.

Three books, well...
- anything by Terry Pratchett (excluding versions for children)
- almost anything by Stephen King
- Ulysses by James Joyce
- lately, urban fantasy by many authors (lots of fun here!)
