[Question] shuts down...?
#1
Question
Hi all...

My Star S5 mtk6589T sometimes shuts down by itself, and I can't even start it up again unless I pull out the battery...Dodgy
My wife is late for work this morning because of that, my phone's alarm didn't wake us up, damn...Can't believe

I don't know if it's a black screen or if it has shut down somehow, but I tried calling the phone and it does'nt ring, it's unreachable...
When I have taken out the battery and reinserted it, I can start the phone back up again and it works as usual. The battery is even full, when I have restarted it...

This has happened a few times now, can anyone tell me why, or have others encountered this...?

From what I've read, this appears to be software related.
Have you made any system modifications... root, cwm, custom rom?
Have you tried built in Android recovery mode and reset the OS to factory state? If you have not, but decide to, make sure to backup all personal data... reset function will erase all data.
If that fails, I would flash the stock firmware if available. If not available, I would search for other firmware source to flash and test.
NOTE: if you're unfamiliar with flashing, please do your research and preparation prior! There are plenty of tutorials within this forum.

Thank you Pufferaway for your reply

It started doing this even shortly after purchase, meaning before rooting it and before tampering too much with it. Therefore I have not tried OS recovery etc, also it's difficult to test because the "fault" is periodic and therefore not so often...
I have a friend with the exact same phone, and he also has this fault.
I have rooted my Star S5 now though, and it has not made any difference to this problem.

I'm VERY glad to hear that the fault appears to be software related, I have also made a Nandroid Backup with the "Online Nandroid Backup" app. It does not recognize the Star S5, but performs a TWRP backup though (size 1,99gb) - I guess that's good enough, or...?

HappyUser,

In the past there have been problems with the phone shutting down intermittently that were due to the battery not making strong enough contact. You can try to wedge something in against the bottom of the battery so it pushes harder against the contacts. A small piece of balled up electric tape, or something similar.

If that doesn't work, it very likely is something firmware related and you might want to try another firmware as Pufferaway suggested.

Ok, I will try that simple maneuver with the battery - thank's Gizbeat...

And afterwards if that doesn't work, I will go the hard way and change the rom. I understand that there are a newer stock rom for the Star S5, than the one already on my phone...

Thank you for helping out :0)

Well, the battery maneuvre didn't do it. So I guess I just have to jump right into the ROM flashing adventure...
I have never tried this before, so I'm a little insecure about it I must say...Can't believe

Is there a bulletproof guide for it, Star S5 specific...?Drool

Well mine has a display hardware problem after a little bit over half a year, so don't expect the hardware to be of good quality...

First thing to be very clear about... There is no such thing as "bulletproof" when modifying system software.
Did you try the built in Recovery yet to reset the OS? That should be tried before any ROM flashing to test whether or not it's a flaw with the factory installed OS version.

First look at Settings and see if there's an option for Backup and Reset. If so, look for Factory Data Reset:
[Image: Screenshot_2013-10-24-02-10-32-393x700.png]
If that's not available: you can enter Recovery Console by starting from phone powered off, then hold down volume up & power until you see screen display Android Green Robot. Use your volume keys to move up and down within menu to choose "wipe data/factory reset" with your phone's main select button (center bottom). You may remove your SD prior to any reset function. Once reset, you'll just have to test for whatever time you feel is reasonable or until problem resurfaces.

Now, I don't know much about your S5+ as compared to the older S5... there are ROMs available at NeedRom, including official S5 updates. Without more information about the build version installed on your phone, there's no way to compare to what's available there. At the bottom of Settings you'll find the About Phone option; You can find the build there and I suggest you type that into a computer text file for easy reference. There are tutorials on needrom, so don't hesitate to look through them as well as those posted here.

I just caught the error on the phone just before it shuts down, pure luck! It says that the battery temperature is critical, although it isn't hot at all??
So I guess the fault lies in the battery, I will try and find a "known brand" battery to fit. Maybe that's why they send you 2 batteries in the box, because it's crap maybe?:0)))

You are very helpfull here, and posting good solutions for me to try out. I appreciate it a lot, thank you all for that...

You're welcome, HappyUser!
It's good that you caught that error message. While it could be a legitimate battery problem, there are cases of sensor errors caused by software glitches. I have also read about cases of dirty or faulty USB port causing battery sensor errors.
Best wishes for the fix!
