Can I upgrade to this version without SD card?

Yeah, I upgraded using SPFlashTool without SD card. Recovery won't work without SD card for now though, it doesn't mount the internal SD.

I have fixed the internal mounting issue, and twrp sees this correctly. But as the internal storage is emulated it is proving a bit*h to mount in windows from recovery , windows see a ext4 drive and wants to format.

Am about to headbutt the keyboard .... i will get it to mount !

Forget mounting it from recovery, I think no TWRP does it with emulated storage (at least none I've seen yet).

I think you can root it without SD, TWRP asks if you want it to root your rom if no root is detected. Just install the rom, boot to recovery and when you exit it will ask, just swype to root.

I'm running v1.0.10 KK right now though, it's my main phone, it's morning here, and I can't be without a phone during the day

Edit: N/M I drop the lk.bin into the 1.0.13 folder and flash only the UBOOT right?
