I don't own a fake, but we are getting some posters who have them.

As a generalization, the faker is likely to have a fake build.prop

2) My advice is as soon as you know you have a fake, complain loud at the seller's site for a full refund. Also buy from our sponsors.

A number of fakes are bought from places other than our sponsors.

3) If you bought off ebay you have a limited time to raise a dispute. Do not wait for reply from seller.....assume they are crooks and raise the ebay dispute immediately.
Give ebay your screenshots of what you bought and what specs you see in the spec device app.

4) There may be an innocent reseller caught out by a fake.....but that tells you they don't have any quality checks.

5) do NOT try to flash any ROM on a fake.....until you have exhausted all attempts to get a refund.

for audit purposes I have had to change the playstore app to cpu-z

My previous recommendation was fine and dandy until an user pointed out that mtkdroid tools said the CPU displayed for spec device was a fake.

Its called a "gotcha" moment and will I live with the shame?

We'll be keeping this thread up. Just because CPU-Z isn't reliable doesn't mean there isn't some useful info in the thread. People may want to add their own methods to determining fake specs as well.

This isn't always possible. Sometimes shipping times exceed the 45 days limit, ebay and paypal in this respect are still in diapers not like aliexpress where you're still able to open a dispute as long as you didn't confirm receipt.
In the case of aliexpress my advice therefore is to always check the received phone before confirming the order receipt, when in doubt about the specs always notify the seller with an aliexpress message as this can be used in a future dispute to prove your good-will.

The one proviso that other readers should consider about ebay or other sites is this

A if price is cheap, you probably don't want to buy door to door courier which for me adds US$30 to delivery.....versus free surface mail

If price is so cheap....expect it to be junk and don't buy the International warranty

B if price is steep, then you tend to buy the door to door cost as its a lower proportion of total costs and it should get to you in a week, maybe 2 if they are slow to ask company to pick up

-----This of course means that resellers should not take more than 3 business days to process your order. But I have read about Chinese trade fairs and such so they are exceptions.

In other words....45 days for ebay should be long enough.

In general you're right, but certain parts need some refinement, however I think that would lead to OT.
Maybe it would a good idea to start a new thread about buying chinese phones (the idea actually occurred to me before your response). [Snip]

I like eBay, most people don't understand how to use eBay, that's why they get taken.
If you don't have item in your hand at 30th day, open eBay claim simple as that.
If item doesn't match description open claim.
