Can you see the difference over 300ppi?

If someone is curious Samsung Galaxy S2 has 215PPI and is super-crisp. So don't believe in marketing lie. Human eye can't see 400 or 500 points per inch.

depends on the distance you're looking from.

I like the ability to move the screen closer when a detail catches my eye. bring it close enough and the density begins to matter. it's a whole lot more convenient than pinch zooming and it's always possible.

anyway the science behind "retina" displays and at which point the PPI stops being noticable is contested. many experts say without reservations that +/- 300 is not the treshold. I don't think anyone thinks going from 200 to 300 is useless.

subjectively I notice the difference between 215PPI and 440 very, very easily. whether going from 300 to 440 matters is more debatable, but I notice it without any trouble.

The difference between 200 and 300 is easy to notice.

I'd lay large bets, that 90%+ of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference from a viewing distance of 6"+ of anything over 300ppi.

over 300ppi is mainly an asset when you're looking at a smaller portion of your screen than the whole screen. I like having full quality images even when the thing I'm looking at is muffled into a small corner.

FHD is far from useless to me; I consider it the most important thing, after maybe at least a 10.000 antutu score or equivalent on other benchmarks. It really takes a lot to make me pick 720p again. Only the ZTE Geek'3 30.000 on antutu made me consider it.

I'd love to put the test to you. 2 4.7" (312) or 5.0" (294) phones with the same 1080p image. One at 720p, one at 1080p. View them from 9" and tell me which is the 1080p phone. You think you could do it?

BTW, there's now a PPI calculator in the sidebar at Gizbeat if anyone should need it.

Believe me, I want to be convinced that 1080p is useless so I can just get myself a ZTE Geek and rest assured that both performance wise and screen wise the phone is practically the best on the market despite its relatively low cost. But I'm not currently there.

I'll ask my dad to let me look at his 720p Cubot GT99 phone again... Will let you know what I think.

Oh by the way, I can actually create exactly the test you describe by putting random 720p and 1080p versions of a picture in a folder, clicking one blindly and displaying it on my phone. Will let you know if I guess right.

OK, I did the test and I did guess the density of the pictures right. It's not like you can't notice the difference. But I gotta admit that I came away from doing the test feeling like getting a ZTE Geek would be a pretty good move. The difference is really very subtle.

However, graphical applications with more artifacts and aliasing issues might be a different story...

ps. an interesting fact is that the 1080p pictures, unlike the 720p ones, got rendered in 2 stages, first with less detail (720p ish) and then in full detail. Another downside since it creates another visual artifact that disturbs the picture temporarily.

Try taking your dad's GT99 and looking at the exact same images from the same distance side by side with your phone. Your dad's GT99 will be 326. See if you can see the difference in curves and edges. On my H7500+ (294), it's impossible to see any sort of jags or pixelization.

Anyways, you made a good point regarding Antutu. There comes a point where current Android simply doesn't run any smoother. I mean to say, I wouldn't trade in your phone for a ZTE Geek for Antutu score alone. Unless you're encoding video or need the extra gaming juice you likely won't notice much of a difference, if any, regarding general Android butter.

there are some issues with this one that I've detected since first using it.

The battery is probably 1800... Android thinks it's 2800 but it makes strange jumps from either 36% to 0% or 64% to 100%... 64% is exactly what percentage 1800 is of 2800. My guess is the jump is where it notices the 36% it still had simply isn't there.

1800 mAh is basically too small for an FHD telephone. Its battery life is pretty miserable when the screen is used. Don't even think about turning up the brightness. Only reason I survive with it is because I use a portable powerbank.

There is a grid of dots on the screen that is barely visible, but it's there. They're best visible in sunlight and almost invisible otherwise. They don't look. Doesn't exactly ruin the image since the dots are so small (single pixel size), but it's a flaw.

It's performance during simple 2D android activities like browsing or using news readers is often disappointing. Graphical lag not at all uncommon. There are even times when the screen begins to flicker a bit, presumable from GPU overworking or something... Remember, it's antutu 2D score is only +/- 690.

So, definitely some room for major improvement.

Hello. This is my first post. Firstly, sticking to the topic, I think my LG GD880 Mini is a great phone and I've had it for 3 years. I noticed how great the 306 PPI is compared to the other type phones in the area like Samsung.

Secondly...

I want to buy a Chinese phone, preferably the Hero 7500+ because of the great ravings I read about its GPS - which I'll be using for car navigation in Iran. Oh boy, I hope I'm getting a good GPS phone combo for this place. I've read weeks worth of stuff on the subject. The only thing I would change about it and why I hesitate to buy it is the camera knob on le back. What's up wif that?
