3.1 ROM is out via OTA update!

Hello,

as formerly already mentioned I'm a "lucky guy" having my D6k upgraded without a problem... I was re-thinking what I did before upgrading as I still had V2.7 on the device. Well, like I said, I was curios what the OTA (V2.7->V3.0) would do to my phone (root, Permanent TWPR). After download, and rebooting it comes back in recovery mode... I wiped and booted and the OTA installed! It showed the intitial "greeting display", just like setting up a brand new phone, selected "English" and went through pages one by one, got stuck at "setting WiFi" connection (got connected, indicated by phone), but the "set up" did not proceed (telling me "no internet connection")... after few reboots, same, reboot without SIM cards it went further into start page, but behaved weird and crazy like many people here alrady reported... no matter SIM or not (flashing screen with SIM). In my understanding, there must be a problem which exsists already since before V3.1!

So, I restored V2.7 through nandroid backup via TWPR, everything fine. Copied SD ROMs of V3.0 and V3.1 to my phone and installed/wiped/rebooted one by one without a real flaw (takes some time after last reboot).

Now here is the only thing came to my mind which is "somehow" related to non-local Chinese set up and requires access to many things while Chinese authorities require local manufacturers to restrict this service... my Google playstore was gone... I don't really know if this is normal or has be done every time a "major" upgrade should be installed... I ended up with having V3.1 working just fine (like discussed with "@robbyx" before, I had to manually change the preference of 2G/3G/4G of each Sim card after swopping slots, but just for once; after that I could move it around just as I wanted), but without Google playstore....

I don't really know if this has any relation to the upgrade problem discussed here by many people or if it makes any sense what I wrote, but it would be interesting to know if this could work if upgrading to V3.1 happens to be OK when Google playstore was fully removed prior to upgrade... I re-flashed "pico Gapps" after everything else turned out to be functional (SIMs, Wlan, system, Apps), works perfectly (in my case, only through VPN, big CN brother is very restrictive lately, also starting to probe VPN and distort now)... else, I had to re-install Xposed framework, but no idea this is because ROM update or new version (V79->V80)...

I don't really don't remember WHEN I lost that playstore (OTA "testing", restoring nand, upgrading V2.7->V3.0 or V3.0 to V3.1), did not pay any attention to it. So, anyone would like to try out if this has any influence on update to V3.1? As said before, I really don't know if this makes any sense what I wrote (while an "upgrade" shouldn't effect any installed App if still with the same OS), I just was trying to review what happened while I was doing trial and error...

Anyway, don't forget to have your Nandroid backup before trying on V3.1 again.

Have a nice day!

Ok so today i have some time, i''ll try to play with it a bit.
Right now i am doing a back-up from the TWRP, The first thing i noticed is i CANT backup if i check the "aboot" option to be backed up. There is something about this, as i remember since i updated my phone from 5.0.2 V1.1 to 5.1 V2.5

When i first updated my phone (from temporary TWRP SD flash) something went wrong and an error message appeared in red but i wasn't able to read it since it suddenly rebooted. After that the phone seemed okay, and the update worked, but the original recovery mode disapeared, and it was impossible to access it, the phone went just black. I already described it somewhere on this forum but i found somehow a way to flash the permanent TWRP but since that moment, everytime i access it it shows an error message about "can't find aboot.bak partition" or something like that. It never bothered me because i already updated again my phone 3 times without problems. But now, i noticed i cant back it up and i wonder if it has something to do about v3.1
And it would be interesting to now if somebody else have this error.
Okay the back up is complete (without aboot though).
I'll try some stuff and will be right back

I've just read this whole thing there.

1. could you write in one or two sentences what you think the "fix" for the SIM problem is?

2. Regarding the gapps/Play, none of the CN/EN ROM have gapps core/Play. This needs to be flashed through TWRP as you already did. Every time you OTA the stock ROM, you will need to flash pico gapps again through TWRP. Why? Because the core of gapps/Play (Google Services etc...) is part of system. When flash a new ROM, it overwrites everything in system.

Quote:1. could you write in one or two sentences what you think the "fix" for the SIM problem is?

I think a possible solution could be:
1. Having a "clean" V2.7, getting back your own stuff via TWPR backup restore.
2. Install ->V3.0->V3.1 without a reboot inbetween and no SIM cards inserted.
3. Do rooting and playstore flash after that.

Again, no idea if this might work or if there is really a problem with non-Chinese SIM cards... maybe next week I have the chance to meet a colleague from Germany. I will ask him for his SIM to put in my D6k, we'll see what happens then.

Well, again no guarantee that it might work... when I got the phone it was on V2.something an I did the OTA here in China one by one up to V2.7. After that I tried to get TWPR on it, but whatever I did I failed... finally I got permanent TWPR installed through temporary... after this I did an "advanced wipe" through TWPR and installed the SD vervion of V2.7, root, pico gapps... ever since I was setting up my own stuff... safed Nandroid backup before going to update ->V3.0->V3.1 when V3.1 was available.

Then I did the OTA stuff to V3.0 like mentioned in the last post, didn't work (as expected) but not just denying update (because rooted phone), it was actually installing the OTA package, just hung with try to go online... power off, removed the SIMs, reboot, the set up proceeded one by one (did a few reboots inbetween) with flashing screen, goes wild... so I rebooted into TWPR and restored my V2.7 (standard backup, data, system, boot) from before... reboot, worked!

Going back to TWPR, installed V3.0, directly after it V3.1, did a normal wipe in between and after, acknowledged the re-rooting, wipe again, rebooted (took some time)... put back in the SIM cards and it worked. Back into recovery, installing pico gapps, wipe, reboot, OK. The only problem I had was that I had to manually change the network preference of each SIM card after swopping slots... but only once... moving back, one, two SIMs, all fine now...

Quote:...would be interesting to now if somebody else have this error.
Okay the back up is complete (without aboot though).
I'll try some stuff and will be right back

For "normal" backup you only need the standard settings (boot, system, data).
The red text message "Can't find partition for a.boot.bak" showed ever since I did the first backup, I think it can be ignored...

Okay i tried different stuff but i always got stuck on berserk screen and networking when i put the SIM in. Airplane mode works well and with it i could see Wifi and Bluetooth are working very well. I even tried to restore the Modem settings from version 3.0 but it doesn't change anything.
I also tried to install 3.1 without root or gapps and wipe wipe wipe dalvik and cache numerous times even after reboot and at first it looked weird because there was no "flashing" it showed only "no sim card". So i rebooted and suddenly the OS turned in Chinese with flashing screen and SIM stuff.
Went back to 3.0[/i]

Hereby I can definitely confirm the SIM problem with V3.1 Since yesterday I'm in Germany and purchased a Vodafone card... phone went crazy after putting in, even SIM slot settings don't work anymore after removing the SIM... many settings are gone... holy crap. Roaming with China mobile card worked just fine before I tried the Vodafone SIM...

Can someone confirm that V3.0 does not have this problem? Otherwise I will flash back to V2.7...

I'm running 3.1 for a while now and have no problems so far. 2 Simcards are in use, Sim1-LTE works fine. No root, no modifications, no spooky effects.

May be the build-Version is the bad guy. Mine is V2.3_abroad and if i remember right your's is higher.

V3.0 is ok for me. The only problem is with sms, but you can use Textra or other apk.

Well, went back to V3.0, it's stable, but after every reboot the Vodafone SIM is switched back to"GSM only"... kills my nerve... does someone know what this "LTE switch" actually is supposed to do?
