[Question] speaker problem on Mtk 6589

Replacing the speaker is an option.
I assume you tired to clean the speakers? Lint and dust can go through the protective grill.
You can try taking it to an electronics store that repairs phones as Khonshu mentioned,
but the thing is it is pretty hard to find Chinese phone parts if you don't live in China.

Assuming it's a simple issue of speaker connection or replacing the speaker, it shouldn't be a problem. There is nothing special about them. Just positive and negative wire connection and speaker small enough to accommodate the area where the speaker goes.

If it ends up being something more than this, for example some main board issue that can't be fixed with solder, then yes they will be unlikely to help.

Have the shop give it a listen first and see what their opinion is before they open it.

I put the phone back to factory settings, downloaded speaker cleaner app and hey presto seems to be OK! Hopefully problem solved! Thanks for all your help! X

Did it work after the factory reset? Or after running the app?

This is very strange situation. I wonder what it could have been. Maybe some app or virus hijacked. That's why wondering if it worked directly after factory reset.
