I'm not in the UK, but I will say this about the Chinese phones...
For generally half the price of the recognized big boy brands you can get a pretty good phone. You just need to be patient, ask the right questions and research until you feel comfortable with the device you are looking at.
Although the MT6592 octa cores are generally better for GPS than the MT6589(T) quad cores, it is not always the case. I have used several MT6592 phones than still had terrible GPS.
The low call volume issue found in Mediatek based phones can
usually be rectified by going into engineering mode through the dialer or with the MobileUncle app and increasing the mic and earpiece volumes.
I also like giant sized displays and find the Chinese selection MUCH better than regular brands which favor the 5" displays.
If you are looking for high end you could look at the ZTE Nubia X6 with a Snapdragon 801 and 6.44" display($575).
I just reviewed the Huawei Mediapad X1 which isn't nearly as powerful but it has a 7" display, great GPS, decent cameras, 5000 mAh battery, good call quality(but you shouldn't be putting a 7" device up to your ear, it's just wrong). That will only set you back $350.
There are many 6.5" MT6592/MT6582 devices available and I'm sure many of them work great, I just suggest to do some digging or be willing to deal with some glitches. Most of those are probably $300 or less.
Good luck.
