Well, I can tell you what has worked in the past for Android versions 4.2 and 4.3, but that is no guarantee on your device. Make sure you have an SD/TF card for the phone that can be formatted or messed with before you begin.
There are tons of tutorials on here to get this accomplished, but basically:
1. Make a complete backup of the device for CWM. This must be perfect. Do not skip this step. If you brick your friends phone, this (and step 2) is what you will need to get a functioning device back in their hands.
2. Either find or make CWM for the device.
3. Install CWM. Make sure you know how to boot into it.
4. Clear Davlink and all cache via CWM
5. Install ROM (either a compatible and tested version via NeedROM or the one you made above)
7. DO NOT reboot!
8. Install SuperSU.zip via CWM
9. Install a SIGNED version of GApps (micro or full - but must be signed) for your Android version zip file via CWM
10. Reboot
11. Profit (maybe)
There is a shortcut to all of this, but it is risky. Basically, pray to whatever God you believe it that the handful of ROMs you selected via NeedROM (most/all of which will already have a functioning PlayStore) will work on your friends device. Flash directly to the device. If it fails, select the next one and repeat until you have a functioning device.
I would only recommend this "shortcut" if you have already bricked the device and have no other choice.
Also, once you have your perfect backup of the current ROM and functioning CWM on the device, the risk of permanently bricking your phone by installing a compatible ROM from NeedROM goes down considerably as you will (obviously) have your backup to flash back to square one easily if needed.
As always, any advice here is dangerous to all devices and you cannot hold anyone responsible for what you do to your (or your friends) device(s). Astroids, earthquakes, herpes, your phone melting, your friends phone melting, and all bad things are not my or chinaphonearena.com fault ever, so be very careful if you decide to go down this road.
The above disclaimer having been said (written?), it is worth the trip for the skills. Just have money put aside to buy your friend a new device, no questions asked, if you brick the current one!
