Hmm, I think you are doing fine with respect to finding solutions. Perhaps just a bit panicky, but no, I wouldn't say idiotic.
Excellent if PC recognizes the phone with no problems. Have you tried a fresh installation of SP flash tool? Different version? (ie 5.xx if you're using 3.xx and vice versa) you also mentioned that PC automatically installed a different set of drivers. Make sure you track down the first installation and get rid of it. Uninstall all your previous phone's IDs on PC.
Have you tried pressing down on the hard buttons while flashing? It would be a trial and error of button combinations, I guess. You can take a look at the sp flash tool error thread in tutorials section. There are some tips there.
