It may seem very basic to some. But newbies really need these tutorials. It would be great to see some of the knowledgeable members taking some initiative and helping out with these tutorials / FAQ / what is / how-to. It doesn't matter how basic or advanced.
I'll try to get this tutorial more fleshed out tomorrow.
1. You need CWM or TWRP installed on your phone. CWM can be flashed via SP Flash Tools , or if you're rooted you can flash through Mobile Uncle.
How to flash CWM

2. Copy gapps to your SD through USB or LAN.
3. Boot into recovery (volUp+power or volDown+power. Depending on your phone, it will be one or the other)
4. Select install from SD from within recovery
5. From within recovery, navigate to the gapps .zip on your SD and install.

And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth

These are flashed normally if there's some problem with Google Play, or if your firmware didn't come with gapps. Gapps is short for Google Apps.

I've hesitated commenting because I still can't get my contacts or calendar to sync, but I have been able to get most of gapps working.
Installing gapps as described in this tutorial left my phone nearly unusable. Every 10 seconds or so a Google app was crashing, and throwing up an FC error message. Every letter I typed into the address bar of the browser would be followed by a message that Google Search had crashed. The Google Play Store app showed "No Connection -- Retry?" even though the phone was connected. I finally got most of it working by manually installing "GoogleLoginService.apk" and "GoogleServicesFramework.apk"
I have a SM-W2014 clone with a MTK6589 chip. Has anyone else had similar problems? Has anyone figured out how to get contacts and calendar to sync?
Thanks.

There are many different gapps packs. If you don't install the correct one for the ROM your on, it's likely to be a mess. Some work better with some ROMs than others. Some won't work at all. Regardless, as posted by Khonshu, this is how to install gapps. It's not going to work out for everyone. If it doesn't work out with one pack, try a different pack. Also, some ROMs that have very buggy systems otherwise may not work with gapps regardless of what you do.
I would recommend trying a different pack, or several. Can't guarantee it will solve your issue, but it might be worth a try.

Thanks for your help with this. I believe I have figured out the problem and the solution. I only have one phone to work with, so I don't know how general the problem is. But I'll post the solution to my problem here in case anyone else experiences it. I believe everything is fully functional now.
I flashed Gapps for 4.3 from a couple of sources, including the one you linked to and the problems were the same. Separately installing the apks listed in my last reply got me part of the way there, but Contacts wouldn't sync. I finally found a thread that matched my symptoms and the solution was to install the GoogleContactSyncAdapter.apk. As a source it suggested the Gapps.zip. So I unzipped my previously downloaded Gapps.zip and found not only GoogleContactSyncAdapter.apk but also the apks I listed above. But when I tried installing the apk I got the error, "There was a problem parsing the package." It turns out that about ten of the apks in the zip installed when I flashed Gapps, but wouldn't run. The other programs that were running didn't show the "parsing" problem. I downloaded and unzipped Gapps for 4.2 and found the same packages (except for GoogleOneTimeInitializer.apk) and they didn't have the "parsing" problem. So I manually installed them into /system/app, set the proper ownership and permissions and now everything works.

Hi
Can I mention I have just tested a number of gapps.
IMHO the best way is as follows
Ensure you have CWM or TWRP correctly working on your device
2) google your version number of Android eg 4.2.2 with other search terms
ultra slim gapps
You will find a forum and a download link of a zip file around 10 MB
3) Instead of flashing .....download Mobileuncle apk onto SD card and
in System settings -> Security....Tick allow unknown sources
then install apk
----This will allow you to reboot into recovery mode without worrying about what buttons to hold etc
good luck

tested a MIUI ROM that was not rooted and no gapps

Dear Gizbeat.
I followed scrupulously your indications to create two recovery images successfully :
SM-N900_141024__recovery_150210-000917.img
SM-N900_141024__boot_patched_150210-000917.img
And a complete backup as well as a dedicated BackupNVRAM .
My goal is to install the Google Play Services on this phone.
Since MTK determined this MT6572 to be 4.2.2; I will need a Gapp that corresponds to my phone .
What I don't yet understand is how I must combine these elements to obtain my desired result.
Thank you.

It is for 4.2.2
And save it in the SD card. Then boot in recovery and install it...
