replace modem.img to test other basebands for MT6589 - g3kamdbs - 2013-06-24

I recently bough a MT6589 samsung clone (brand unknown) with flaky 3g data and call issue. Everything works fine in GSM (Edge) mode but not in WCDMA. in WCDMA I can get data only with full signal and the letter above the bar shows H+.

I checked my baseband version to be MOLY.WR8.W1248.MD.WG.MP.V6, 2013/02/20

I have been trying to extract different modem.img files from different ROMS with similar MT6589 chipset. I just renamed the existing modem.img from /system/etc/firmware and replace it with the extracted file also set the correct permission. All of the modem.img(s) seem to be incompatible with my phone, there is no signal at all even the one that shows the same version MP.V6 albeit different compile date.

Are there any extra steps or files that are needed after replacing a baseband/modem file? Do I need to wipe cache etc?

Any help would be appreciated as I am quite a newbie with this android hacking process!

You can try flashing from SD Update. You'll need a custom recovery. I don't think it will make a difference though.

So you're able to connect to 3g when the signal is full. That would indicate to me you're not in an area where the 3g signal is being broadcasted strongly, or possibly some issue with your 3g radio's antenna.

What happens if you switch to WCDMA only. Can you make phone calls?

I was able to make phone calls with WCDMA too. However I would get cut off randomly and the data connection was very flaky.

I would understand weak signals and poor antenna. However the signal strength was mostly showing 3 bars not 1 or 2 bars out of 4. Basically I did not get consistent data + voice connection if the bar was not full. Another note was that I only got internet connection when the signal indicator was only on H+ and not H, which is really weird.

This problem absolutely went away with GSM only connection. I was able to get data connection (very slow but consistent) and make phone calls consistently.

So back to the original question. I take that there are no further actions need to be taken to just replace the modem.img file and it should work? Does it matter if my phone only has a single SIM slot? Most of the other clone models have dual SIMs.

Thanks

That is the signal from the tower, but not necessarily the strength of the 3g signal.

You're correct. As I said, there's nothing more you need to do unless you want to try flashing from recovery, but I doubt it will make a difference.

Actually having single SIM could very well be the problem. It could be a different configuration altogether and require a specialized baseband driver to work properly. It's still possible the 3g signal is weak or it's an antenna issue.

Are you or your friends able to get 3g with other phones on AT&T?

My wife has a genuine Samsung Note II and 3g connection works well even with only 2 bars. It is definitely a phone problem.

Also do you think the Maui Meta software update to fix 3g by Mediatek would work better? By looking at the screenshot in this website,

It seems to be applying additional parameter changes to the radio chipset and NVRAM database than just replacing the modem.img file.

Take a look at the attached screen as well.

You can try. There is a tutorial in the H7500+ forum. These parameter files may be phone specific though.

It's possible your wife's phone is picking up 3G on 1900MHz. The only way to test that is to disable all frequencies on her Samsung except for 850 WCDMA.

Google "samsung service mode note 2". Depending on what firmware she's on, she may be able to enter it easily, or may require the app "Samsung Service Mode" from Play.

If you can get her Samsung to 850MHz WCDMA only and it's working, my recommendation would be to try and return the phone to China and get a better known phone so you can have some support (Hero, UMi, Star, THL etc...)

You can also try to flash this to your phone along with a SP Flash Tool version of your firmware. Unrar the folder "database" in among the firmware files and it should flash the parameter changes when you "update firmware". However, getting a SP Flash Tool version of your firmware may prove difficult and obviously I can't guarantee whether this will help or not and it's at your own risk.

That's it for Gizbeat. I'm getting mighty thirsty. Good luck.
what i did to fix it is format the flash mem with spft.
than do a full restore of the rom in download mode.
you must have made a full backup or a full rom exactly matching your phone.
i lost front cam, but can live with that Smiling.
on with the porting Smiling

How do you connect the phone in meta mode? i just can't get it to wirk. I do indtalled all the drivers.

Why would you try and change anything? H+ -HSDPA- is a protocol that allows for faster speeds than 3G -UMTS-.
