Since my problem started with 3G not working, I plan to extract the modem.img from the new firmware and push it to the old firmware. Not sure whether this will solve the 3G problem in the old firmware.
It should, I would replace the entire firmware folder as well as mddb folder, also if the new firmware includes a nvram.bin most don't but if it does flash it as well.
