I need to have to buttons backlit so I can see them.
How can I know if a particular phone has backlit buttons
I never see an indication in the reviews

In this case, it might be best to ask the seller. Are there specific models of phones you are looking at? If so, ask the people around here who own them or have experience with them.

Most all the China phones have some back light. Only very very few do not having the backlight. Yes, to be sure of that, maybe ask the seller, or ask about the very specific model you will buy.
