Hi, Paul. I have read posts on another forum where the sales manager listed below discusses how the iNew engineers have reduced the 850 frequency power output because the phones are designed primarily for the Chinese market's 2100 signal.
Here's the conversation quote exactly:
"The information I got from the factory and engineer is:
All the smart phones are with 850, 1900 and 2100.
To make the phone has good WCDMA signal, the software are make 2100 stonger, even 850 is not good as 2100. 1900 is only fro South American market, we have no big buyer there, so the PCB board make 1900 signal even weaker then 850ghz."
I know they have released several firmware updates for the i2000, but don't know anything specifically about the changes within them. You may try to reach out directly to Hoper and see if he can provide any clarification or suggestion to fix the issue.

The only other consideration I can think of offhand would be the ATT APN settings... maybe there's a configuration edit needed.
