Hi all,
I recently purchased "Lenovo" P780W model from aliexpress, it's based on MTK6592 with 2G ram. The phone is OK, but it's strange for me that the phone doesn't have GPS feature.
Since I'm not expert in chinese phones, my question is whether this is a problem with the firmware, the Android GPS driver or the phone hardware doesn't support GPS (which is strange ??)
Thanks
Dejan

It should have GPS, have you rooted phone and checked with Mobileuncle? Do the specs show GPS?

I think price too low, most likely fake specs, this most likely not 8 core, if you have adb setup and cwm recovery I have commands for you to try and see how many core, and how much ram is installed.

Hi vampirefo
unfortunately you're right, the phone is MTK6572, here below the info from MTK Droid tools:
Hardware : MT6572 (MT6592 is Fake!)
Model : P780W
Build number : ALPS.JB3.MP.V1.2
Build date UTC : 20140429-091303
Android v : 4.2.2
Baseband v: MOLY.WR8.W1315.MD.WG.MP.V2.P11, 2013/11/22 11:43
Kernel v : 3.4.5 (android@ubuntu) (gcc version 4.6.x-google 20120106 (prerelease) (GCC) ) #2 SMP Tue Apr 29 18:13:27 CST 2014
So a dispute is for sure on aliexpress I also installed the Mobile uncle tool (with root), but please tell me how to check whether the GPS is actually present as hardware or not? Unfortunately with mobile uncle I don't know how to make copy/paste of the system info? Which commands you thought I could try to check the phone?
thanks

Try this for getting it working. Common error by users is not sitting it outside for awhile to catch the first cold lock. Its not always needed, but sometimes is. Basically set GPS test to not turn off screen, then leave phone outside for 15 minutes.
Use [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register] for checking if device has GPS onboard.
It might not even be Lenovo. Probably not if the SoC is faked. I don't think they make a MT6572 phone.

Hi sniper
thanks for the advice.
I tried with the second app (z-test) and the app doesn't recognise a GPS sensor. My issue is to determine if the phone has actuall GPS sensor installed, but the GPS driver (api) is not installed for some reason in the firmware.
As for the phone is fake for sure. The unit itself is actually a good phone, good touchscreen and buttons, good stable and fast performance, good battery life. The only issue is that these scammers are faking it and advertising as MTK6592.

It's very unlikely your phone would have GPS hardware, but not include the driver/API/ability to use it in the ROM.
Have you tried the tutorial as suggested in the first reply?
Is ability to turn GPS on/off listed in android settings?

for MTK6592. the gps is much better than MTK6589.
i had tried 4 MTK6592 phones, they r quite good,
Also has to take note, after it locks the GPS, the signal bars should be more than 4/5 in yellow all the times, or else u will have yr location out of position when u r using navigation app.
if u see yr bars only 1/2 in yellow, u still can use the nav. app, but the location will be jumping, not accurate

We already sad that this phone is not MTK6592. IT IS MTK6572, I'm not even sure if it has 2GB of RAM, I think it has 1GB and rest of it is fake in the kernel.
OK but not about that.
Where can I find some customs/orginal ROMs for that phone or how to look for it (by the name P780w or by MTK6572 or maybe by t260)?
Lots of people bought this phone and i'm sure this topic will be more and more intristing
