I always use the NAND-backup in CWM and backup my data every night with Titanium Backup; for me that's a perfect combination. Never fails :-)

I stopped using nandroid long ago. There's no point if I've got SD firmware and going to restore from Titanium. Everyone's different though and it really depends on the situation as well.

Before flashing a new ROM I always make a NAND backup; it restores everything like it was when I decide not to keep the new ROM. TB doesn't restore everything like it was, it doesn't backup my contacts, calender items and widgets in GoLauncher.
Also restoring certain system settings from TB may mess up your new ROM. I feel more secure making two backups, NAND and TB, just in case ;-) .
All of my contacts and calendar data is synced through Google. As I said, it really depends on the situation. There are definitely some positives and situations where a nandroid backup or nandroid backup and Titanium is the best solution. Your example of flashing a new firmware, then using Titanium to restore system data and apps, and having the nandroid backup in case you want to easily revert is a perfect example.
