What kind of headphones do you use?

I bought them with zero expectations. Just for the funny factor. When they came, I gave them to the girlfriend. She loved them, and put them on immediately.

Then she was like, "Whoa! You have to hear this!"
And I was like, "Whoa! I'm not falling for that!"
And she was like, "No! Really! You HAVE to hear this!"
And I was like, "You HAVE to be joking!"

They are doofy DOOFY headphones made for freaking CHILDREN. They probably sound like those $0.99 craptacular headphones from the 80s re-packaged in a crappy fuzzy plastic housing. They HAVE to! Why would they bother selling anything besides that in that kind of package to that specific market? They simply have to be crappy. There's no way around it.

Turns out they have a 40mm driver and sound.... surprisingly rich.

Blew. My. Mind.

Extreme first world problems to be sure!

Personally, I find the Xiaomi's to be inferior in regards to base in comparison - for some reason it seems muddier, but since I am a lover of music rather than an audio-technician, this is just complete opinion. Additionally, the mid-range seems a bit cleaner and more defined. However, I think the Xiaomi's seem to have a better upper range to my ear.

As for the kids headphones - WOW! 40mm driver with rich sound and goofy packaging = major win!

Keep the hits comin'

Good thread.

(2014-10-30, 04:21)WuddaWaste Wrote: Great choice, @JoshMcMadMac ! I'm a huge Monoprice fan in general. I bought those Monoprice 8320 buds beofre Head-Fi went nuts for them after loving their predecessor (sealed, white extended bass buds).

Because of the shipping with Monoprice, I bought like 3-4 pairs with high hopes. When I received them, I couldn't get them to fit right. And as you bud-heads know, fitment is everything. I promptly gave them away to others who seemed to like them.

Fast forward 6 months, and those buds had exploded on Head-Fi. So I bought more. I threw on some of the Sony medium silicone tips (green inside) and they sounded pretty dang good.... but I still couldn't get them to fit right. Gave even more away.

How do you like the Comply tips? I've read so much about them but haven't convinced myself to pull the trigger yet. How often do you end up replacing them?

I love the Comply tips. I picked them up new/used off of a friend for cheap, but they are definitely worth the price of admission. I do not use them a ton, but see no need to replace them in the foreseeable future. They get a "bath" with a little soapy water every once in awhile to renew them. You could also try cutting and adding an earplug behind the original Monoprice tips. I did that at first and it helped a lot. Cool

Man, this thread and my brain are a bad combo. I'm still waiting for my Knowledge Zenith earbuds to arrive, but this really makes me want to buy more tips. It's just hard to make a decision without getting to try them out first.

Comply makes SO many variants of tips. It seems like the "comfort" series would make the most sense for me, but the "isolation" line is the most popular. Even within a series, it seems like they have the -100, -200, -300, -400, and -500 models made for different ear buds. And then sizes. Which one(s) do I buy?

Because I'm a little bored, I'm gonna kick out some informal reviews. So far, I bought and tried two pairs of each of the following Knowledge Zenith headphones:
- KZ-R3
- KZ-EDSE
- KZ-GR (bass edition)

In general, my thoughts are as follows.

R3: Very warm, natural, nice. If I were to gift headphones to someone who likes lush tones and would appreciate the warmth of wood, these would be my first choice. In fact, if I were to gift them at all, they seem flashy and lush. They'd be a go-to choice for most. I like them a lot. If I had to destroy all the pairs but one, it would probably be these ones. I absolutely love everything about the warmth, and everything about the construction. Unfortunately, it looks like they might be discontinued and they're harder to find. Accordingly, I'm trying not to fall TOO in-love with them.

EDSE: Overall, these are the most comfortable of the bunch. My first impression were that the mid-highs (10kHz or so) were VERY pronounced. These really make vocals POP. The true highs that would make listening fatiguing are recessed. The bass is deep and reasonably controlled. I'd hard for me to talk about soundstage much because I don't fully understand all of it, but they do seem to be much more open and wide sounding than the other buds. The metal construction makes them feel quite substantial. Because of the comfort, I can see myself using these quite a lot. My ears kind of adapt quickly to the rest so they sound really good after not too much time, but off the batt they do sound a little colored. Most people would like the sound of them, and I actually had one friend who turned around and bought a pair after listening to mine.

KZ-GR: These are full metal construction headphones with monster bulbous driver housings. Historically they came with two different earpieces -- one for a balanced sound, and one for bass-heavy. The ones I bought apparently only for bass. For those that are already familiar with this line, these are the later version that don't have the pinhole in the earpiece. The bass is strong and powerful for sure. The headphones overall sound pretty good. For having big housings, they are surprisingly comfortable, but not as comfortable as the EDSE. I'd probably stop wearing them after 2 hours tops just for comfort reasons. The sound is a little more claustrophobic than the EDSE, and not quite as warm as the R3, but still pretty good. I wouldn't hesitate to gift these to anyone, and the first thing they'd notice is the heavy construction and feel of the buds themselves. Another one of my friends tried these and really liked them. I'm having him take them for a few days and compare them to his favorite buds he has at home.

All of them seem pretty great and I'd be happy listening to any of them. The R3s make me happiest, but I think I might end up listening to the EDSEs most for comfort reasons and because I won't be too sad when they get destroyed. (Weird mentality, I know.)

Right now I'm contemplating putting in another order for more to try out. I think I have a obsessive problem.
