Lenovo s850 root (mtk6582/4.4.2)
I assume it can see it as its very basic but it boots to to it and installs the ota update via it.

OK try at own risk the changelog is more of an explanation as I have no idea if my method is going to work

stock recovery line for storage is
Quote:/devices/platform/mtk-msdc.0/mmc_host auto vfat defaults voldmanaged=sdcard0:emmc@fat,noemulatedsd

Being a simple person then I chose to mod your fstab line to CTR line as follows
Quote:/sdcard vfat /devices/platform/mtk-msdc.0/mmc_host

I also resisted making too many changes in CTR init.rc so effectively this is your new action line
Quote:export EXTERNAL_STORAGE /sdcard
snip
mkdir /sdcard
mkdir /internal_sd
mkdir /external_sd
snip
# mkdir /emmc

What am I attempting?
Your internal will always remain internal but I am calling external and its mount point.....is now /sdcard

Assuming you kept a zip file on the internal storage do a quick test
Start CTR and choose
install zip
from sdcard (not from internal storage)
(and your internal storage zip files should become visible)

IF AND ONLY IF THEY DO
then you can swipe left a few times and go to main menu and
choose backup
choose first entry called backup
(not the backup to internal storage)
backup should look like its working with no errors

good luck

download is here

If it works keep it on PC....re-flash stock so you can get future OTAs

If quick test fails......and you seem happy enough to sell as a mp4 player then I won't waste any more time on it.
So either this last attempt works or it doesn't

Always look on the briiiight side of death.....Monty Python

I will give it a try. But will this go any way to address the no signal issue? If not is there much point? I have asked for an RMA from where I bought and with a bit of luck they wont notice the different rom etc.

You mentioned your serial number is all zeroes. Until you are able to restore that you won't get network service. I got a tool for restoring your serial number but it will take you back to the problem of obtaining a copy of your stock ROM with modem database file.

Pretty sure it has a rom that should work on it now. If I could try restoring serial number and try. Though someone on another forum said it did not matter having the wrong serial number?

I found an imei and sn writer it did it ok but now it says
s/n 00000000
p/n correct serial

Your serial number has wrong number of characters as per
Quote:A 64-bit number (as a hex string) that is randomly generated when the user first sets up the device and should remain constant for the lifetime of the user's device
reference
[Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register]

Its possible you did not know this.....and put in the wrong number of characters?
in which case Android will "null" the serial number. why not try again with the simple s/n as below in quote box---without the quotes?

OTHERWISE READ ON

I have googled and the serial number is set by init.usb.rc for some phones
firstly this is the string from your stock recovery but it was commented out with a #
meta_init.rc
Quote:write /sys/class/android_usb/android0/iSerial "0123456789ABCDEF"

On my system I could not find "iserial" so we may be better off first getting you to search and zip together all the normal boot up init.rc files you can find.

upload it so I can have a look.

if iserial is mentioned in your rc files then we can set it by simple text edit
and yes look for that meta file first

if you find, feel free to use root to edit and then do a full reboot to test it.

good luck

reference see line 2 is set as a VARIABLE while you can make it absolute

Wrote it again but still sets s/n as zeros and p/n underneath.

I am just gonna stop now and save you the hassle mate. Asked for a return, maybe they will refuse but worth a shot as its just a media player at the moment.

I should mention that if you are using some program to write a serial number
your system files.....some init.rc file will always
I repeat
always over write your stuff because that is how it should be.

If you never rebooted ignore my remarks.

2) but that also allows you to create an init script in /etc/init.d that writes an absolute serial number each boot up.

3) Potential file name is /etc/init.d/99serial

contents
Quote:# set the actual serial
write /sys/class/android_usb/android0/iSerial "0123456789ABCDEF"

# correct the permissions
chmod 0664 /sys/class/android_usb/android0/iSerial
chown root system /sys/class/android_usb/android0/iSerial

You will need root powers to also get the permission of the init script correct
Code:
su
chmod 755 /etc/init.d/99serial
chown root.root /etc/init.d/99serial

give it a shot........you never you know your luck in the big city.

good luck

Come back and post you are willing to look at your init scripts if you ever change your mind.

cheers
